The World Wide Web Will Continue To Spread

In a few days the World Wide Web will celebrate its sixteenth birthday. The World Wide Web was made available for widespread use on April 30, 1993. In the last sixteen years the global spread of the web has been truly incredible.

In fact, more than twenty three percent of the world’s population now uses it as a resource. The web is used to talk to friends and to keep in touch with people around the world. The Web is used to buy things, for research purposes and has sponsored a global communications revolution that is still underway

The Web has proven to be the most reliable machine in the world and it is incredibly durable. It features more than fifty five trillion links between web sites and uses more than five percent of global electricity. Its users are active as seen through the 100 billion clicks they make on the web each day.

However, even after sixteen years, the incredible growth of the web appears to be only in its infancy. It looks like global use of the world wide web is about to escalate as mobile internet access introduces web surfing to millions of new users in developing countries.

Soon, users will not need to use an expensive computer to surf the web, a cheaper smart mobile phone will allow them access to the internet instead. Consider that a report by Informa Telecoms and Media concluded that nearly 40 percent of mobile phones sold in 2013 will be smart phones, growing by a third each year on average. Unlike the current crop of mobile phones, smart phones will be built in the future to access the internet.

Although, originally designed for thousands of scientists to share information and data from anyplace in the world, the web has evolved into a device connecting people as well as data. As a result of an explosion of user generated content, the number of Web sites has grown from 500 sites in 1994 to over 100 billion web pages in 80 million locations today.

So, what is the future of the world wide web? Where does the internet technology go from here? The technology is like an expanding communication frontier according to Internet co-founder Vinton Cerf .

He recently said: "We will have more Internet, larger numbers of users, more mobile access, more speed, more things online and more appliances we can control over the Internet. We never, ever in the history of mankind have had access to so much information so quickly and so easily."

Still, major problems remain in the effort to access all of the data on the world wide web. Information may be available but cannot be found easily because it is written in a language that the receiver can't understand or the search engines can't find.

The evolution of the World Wide Web will provide smarter intelligence where machines become better information brokers. The next phase of the Web provides the prospect of a world where computers and the global community become even better connected.

Indeed, the World Wide Web will continue to spread. Its a communications revolution that will continue to dramatically change our world in the years and decades ahead.
