Hillary Clinton Repackaged As Secretary Of State
Saturday, December 6, 2008 at 07:06PM It is always interesting to compare what a successful politician will say to get elected in a Presidential campaign and what subsequently happens. For example, many people remember George Bush's (41) famous campaign pledge of "Read My Lips, No New Taxes" in the 1988 Presidential campaign only to propose raising taxes after his Election Day victory.
Certainly, the truth can be an elusive thing during Presidential campaigns. This was apparent when Barack Obama announced his intention to nominate Hillary Clinton as his administration's Secretary Of State. It was political repackaging at its very best.
In introducing his former campaign rival as the Secretary Of State nominee, Barack Obama would say: "I am proud that Hillary Clinton will be our next Secretary of State. She is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence; who knows many of the world's leaders; who will command respect in every capitol; and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interests around the world."
It was a strong vote of confidence of her foreign policy credentials However, his endorsement of Clinton's foreign policy experience was far different than what he said about her on the campaign trail just a few months ago.
It was just last March, when Barack Obama said mockingly of the New York senator: "What exactly is her foreign policy experience?" "Was she negotiating treaties? Was she handling crises? The answer is no."
In April, Barack Obama was addressing a crowd in a fundraiser in San Francisco. He was quoted as saying that "foreign policy is the area where I am probably most confident that I know more and understand the world better than Senator Clinton or Senator McCain."
Several days later, Barack Obama would again question Hillary Clinton's foreign policy credentials. "When Senator Clinton brags 'I've met leaders from 80 countries,' I know what those trips are like. I've been on them. You go from the airport to the embassy. There's a group of children who do a native dance. You meet with the CIA station chief and the embassy and they give you a briefing. You go take a tour of a plant that [with] the assistance of US AID has started something. And then you go."
The Obama campaign would release a memo that in detail would outline Senator Clinton’s lack of foreign policy credentials. The memo would conclude that; "There is no reason to believe that she was a key player in foreign policy at any time during the Clinton Administration. She did not sit in on National Security Council meetings. She did not have a security clearance. She did not attend meetings in the Situation Room".
The Obama campaign memo continued; "She did not manage any part of the national security bureaucracy, nor did she have her own national security staff. She did not do any heavy-lifting with foreign governments, whether they were friendly or not. She never managed a foreign policy crisis, and there is no evidence to suggest that she participated in the decision-making that occurred in connection with any such crisis. As far as the record shows, Senator Clinton never answered the phone to make a decision on any pressing national security issue".
Barack Obama’s has repackaged Hillary Clinton as his nominee for Secretary of State. However, it's change, you cannot believe in, because political expediency is a politician's game. Barack Obama’s opinion of Hillary Clinton's foreign policy qualifications may have changed, but only after his recent election altered America's political terrain.
