Ground Hog
Groundhog Day stems from a German tradition that says if a hibernating animal casts a shadow Feb. 2, the Christian holiday of Candlemas, winter will last another six weeks. Spring would come early if there is no shadow.
So, men were dressed in tuxedo's and the crowed numbered several thousand as the Groundhog in Pennsylvania - Phil - saw his shadow this morning and forecast six more weeks of winter to come.
Phil has seen his shadow 98 times since 1887, hasn't seen it 15 times, and there are no records for nine years.
One Unusual Cat
Meanwhile, in Rhode Island, a cat is gaining national fame. At Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre in Providence, Rhode Island, a cat called Oscar has accurately predicted 50 deaths.
The cat predicted 25 deaths since an article appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2007. The cat is anti social and only stays with a patient that is about to die, predicting the death.
There is now a book about the unusual cat called "Making rounds with Oscar: the extraordinary gift of an ordinary cat", but no scientific explanation is given in the book for the cats unusual ability to predict death.
